You will make this optimization task a whole lot easier by choosing
short key phrases rather than just single keywords. This is because
when people do a search they usually have something specific in
mind. So if someone is searching for an opportunity, they don't use
the search word "opportunity" as this is too general. Something like
"home based business opportunity", or "small business ideas" are
good examples of how people will usually refine their search. In
other words typing in "opportunity" will bring up results too broad
to be of any use, so people narrow the results by defining more
closely what it is they're looking for.
Also, by focusing on more definable phrases rather than single words
you are targeting visitors that are actually looking for the
specific information you are providing. This is good for them,
easier for the search engines to understand and categorize, and
especially good for you as you are receiving genuinely interested
visitors.
Once you have found the best key phrase you can find you then need to do three things:
1.
Your title tag should have that key phrase in it (preferably the first words within the sentence), and your description tag
could have the phrase within it too but this is less important (if you
don't understand what I mean by this sentence please read
here). You could also use the phrase within the
keywords tag too if you like but this does not make much difference these days
as most of the big important search engines ignore this tag.
2.
Make sure this key phrase is well
integrated throughout the page.
It should be an integral part of the page as a
whole. In other words it should be mentioned several
times throughout the page but in a natural way.
3. The headline of your page
is one of the most important
parts of your optimization strategy. It should include your search phrase(s),
be the first part of the copy on the page, and be a larger
text size to the rest of the page. This is a significant step to
defining the theme of the page so use html text rather than an image
(which the search engines can't read).
The search engines see headlines as a good indicator of the real theme a
webpage. Many webmasters use tricks to try and influence the search
engines to give a page a higher ranking. Keyword stuffing is the most
popular way to try and do this, but the headline is hard to fake because
it is such an important part of the page. It is the first thing the
visitor reads and so webmasters know that if they don't describe the
content realistically the back button will be clicked before the page
has even loaded fully.
Also the headline generally describes the paragraphs to follow, so you
can see why headlines on a page will carry a lot of weight as to how the
search engines categorize a webpage. So because the search engines will
take the headline seriously, it should be considered an important part
of your optimization strategy.
These tips are important for getting a good
ranking but there are other points you should bear in mind. Remember optimizing is imperative in order
to gain a top position but it isn't everything. Here are some common sense
tips.
It's almost pointless getting a high position in
the search engines if reading your page doesn't
inspire them to do what you want them to do.
Once you're happy with the page leave it for a few
months to see how it works out before making drastic
changes. Remember it can take a long time for your
optimized pages to rank highly even after the long
wait to get indexed in the first place. Once your
page is in the search engine's index give it a
chance to get properly established before you start
tweaking your work because you haven't
yet got a good position.
It's also perfectly normal for your page to continually
rise and fall in its ranking. Don't panic if it
falls. This is normal. Be patient. After the wait
you had to get your page indexed in the first place,
you then have
to wait a while longer because it will take time to see how your page "ages" in the
indices.
In
time it will settle down as the search engines
determine your pages click-through popularity. Any
changes you make to your site may not be reflected
in it's rating for several months or more, so be
patient before you make drastic alterations.
A
final important point:
Don't
bother submitting your site to the search engines. This is a
waste of time and effort. Instead establish links to your site from other
websites of a similar theme. The big important search engines will not
index you if no other domains are linking to your
site. This way the engines will find your site naturally and that's how
they like to do it.
There
is software you can use to help you obtain links such as
Axandra's
Arelis.
But if you don't want to use this software then do it
manually. It may take a lot of time and effort but
it is essential if you are seriously wanting to get
nicely indexed with the big search engines. The most ideal links
you can have pointing to you are from the major directories such
The Open Directory.
I
hope this advice will help you get a number one
position.
