Building a Business Website

So Lets Begin...

Alright, that's got the foundation principles out the way. I just felt I needed to talk about how you should be thinking in order to get you up and running in the right direction. Now let's get down to the nitty-gritty.

Firstly, you must realize how important it is that each page of your website is written around a particular theme. This is because one of the most important elements to building your website is to aim towards getting a good placement on the major search engines.

Assuming that you don't want to spend a fortune on a huge marketing budget, getting a high search engine ranking will be the most critical part of your promotional campaign. As the web continues to grow at tremendous speed, getting a high ranking in the top engines is getting more and more difficult. But if you can get a decent ranking for popular search phrases then your site, at least in terms of potential customers, is sitting pretty.

The first rule to obtaining this goal is to create a theme to your web pages based around certain related key-words and phrases. Once you have got the key phrases you wish to use (I'll show you how on the next page), you then start to write with these words in mind.

When you have decided which key phrases you are going to base your page on, use this same phrase, or phrases, to make up the title and description tags in your pages' code.

The title and description tags are hidden from view when displayed through browsers (i.e. as seen by the human eye), but are the first thing the search engines read when scanning the pages html code. To get an idea look at the source code of other peoples websites to see how they do it (click "view", then "source" in your browser) and look for this kind of thing at the top of the page:

<head>
<title>Title goes here</title>
<meta name="description" content="Description goes here">
</head>

Check out your competitors sites, i.e. those sites that come out top for search results where you'd like to be. If their site comes out top then you know that this is a good example of how the search engines like to see it. You'll probably see lots of other tags and bumph around the title and description tags, ignore these for now. The most important, by far, are the title and the description tag.

The title is the most important part of the page for including your key phrases that people will be searching for. However, also use the same key phrase within the description tag, and also throughout the body of your pages' content (without overdoing it or you could get penalized for trying to spam the search engines).

All this should significantly help you towards the goal of establishing a very good ranking within the most popular big name search engines. Enjoying such a good position is one of the very best ways to be working smart - rather than hard.
